Dawn was on the approaching, rolling her colors across the sky, as Eden saw the rotors of the helicopter power up. Eden and Baxter sat in near silence, aware that everything they said or did was reducing the amount of oxygen inside the submersible.

Eden peered through the porthole and saw two of Thorne’s thugs force the Norwegian crew into the chopper. Then another pair of thugs appeared, surrounding her father and Gustavsson. Winslow helped the bulky Norwegian stagger towards the chopper.

A moment before boarding, Winslow stopped and glanced back at the Njord Havspeil marooned on the deck below. One of the thugs nudged Winslow in the back, earning himself a snarl from Gustavsson.

Seeing her father sent a bolt of determination through Eden’s body.

Winslow looked at the submersible for a long moment, then conceded to the thug’s command, and climbed inside the chopper.

“Can they take everyone on board that chopper, as well as and the Lady of Leone?” Eden said, her mind desperate for some good news.

“That’s an MH-60S Knighthawk,” Baxter said, as though stating the obvious. “Capable of transporting 13 people, plus the pilot and co-pilot in its current configuration. If they strap the crate beneath somehow, then it’s possible.”

“Fifteen in total,” Eden said, thinking out loud. “That means…” she worked out the number of the Norwegian crew she knew were alive, including Gustavsson and her father, plus Thorne and his men. The answer struck her like a blow to the guts. “That’s 15,” Eden said, her voice was so quiet she wasn’t sure whether she’d actually said it out loud.

Baxter nodded and gazed down at his hands.

“So, there’s no one on board this ship?” Eden said.

“I don’t know for sure,” Baxter replied. “But it’s possible that they all left on that chopper.”

The pair sat in silence for almost a minute.

“But this is a big ship. It can’t just be left to drift. Someone will find us, right?”

“Yes, but there’s no telling how long that’ll take. It could be weeks, or even months, depending on the weather and the currents.”

Then the distant sound of the chopper increased as the engines reached their full thrust.

Eden peered through the porthole again and saw Thorne fastening something beneath the chopper. Once he was satisfied that the object was fastened securely, the brute climbed inside and closed the door.

“How much oxygen do we have?” Eden said, glancing at Baxter.

Baxter leaned over and checked the oxygen monitor which thankfully wasn’t connected to the submersible’s power supply. “It’s hard to say exactly, as it depends how much we use.” He ran through some calculations. “At an estimate, we will be comfortable for around fifteen minutes.”

“What do you mean comfortable?” Eden asked.

Baxter turned to look at her, his expression grave. “I mean, after that we will start to experience the effects of oxygen deprivation. Suffocation could come quickly, or take a while, there’s no knowing.”

Eden felt her heart skip a beat. She felt the thump-thump-thump of the chopper’s rotors vibrating through the submersible’s cradle as the machine prepared to depart.
